Pointillism is one of painting techniques established by neo-impressionism artists. Pointillism expresses an image by a huge number of colored points or very short line strokes instead of line strokes. The greatest characteristic of neo-impressionism is using color fusion phenomenon called “optical mixture” skillfully. Optical mixture is a visual effect that juxtaposed vivid color dots cause similar spectra of colors because the additive color mixtures on a retina blend these dots into one color. In addition, they devise an effect called “complementary color contrast”. This visual effect generates very brilliant color contrast by placing two or more complementary colors side by side. In this paper, we propose a method for generating pointillistic images automatically from input images including photographs, considering both optical mixture and complementary color contrast.
